Week Eight

After creating numerous patterns with my circles I now wanted to use them within my work but I needed to find a way to transfer them onto fabrics, as my samples were going to be aimed towards a fashion and textiles audience. I tried various ways of transferring them over from cellulose thinner, Image maker, and printing to printing on canvas then it occurred to me I could transfer my images onto fabric using the digital technique. I thought this was a great contrast to the work I was trying to create with hand processes and gave good contrast to contemporary and the traditional which is something I always like to challenge. After the printing on canvas paper which is printed by inkjet I had an idea to cut my patterns into circles again but was not happy with the quality I was getting from the canvas paper, so decided to try it in another media which was laminate which I felt worked great, creating circles that reminded me of sequins.

Week Seven

This week I have been searching and gathering inspiration for the process of sampling. Artists such as Mr Finch whose work I found inspiring has made me think about embroidery especially tapestry like needlework. His work here show butterfly and moths re created by the method of textiles. 

This textile artist has encourage my ideas for tapestry and by that I have continued to look at other tapestry especially in fashion. These images below are from top fashion house, but what they all have in common is their use of floral imagery. This has given me the determination to tapestry my own patterns hoping I could show I different type if new and old that does not have to include florals. 

Below is my sample of embroidery tapestry where I use the ideas of my circle on voile. I feel they have worked well and I love the contrast of thick stitching light fabrics. I realise these are not exactly circle but circles proved difficult to create exact however I feel this unperfect works well and reflects back to my first weeks thoughts.

Week Six

This week I have continued to create patterns with the cut out circles this is in order to created a base for my sample experimentation in which intend to start next week. 

Week Five

After my paintings I started thinking about how I could translate them into my own samples and experimentation work. I realised that it was the interesting marks which drew my interested which included eye shapes on the wings such as the ones below, these gave me the idea of using circles shapes. So I then furthered my ideas with the creation of patterns in which would be made up of circles. This idea to the cutting of circles which to begin with started by cutting out by hand from printed copies of my previously painted wings. This process was taking along time to individually hand cut out circles as I was having to draw the circle on the image before cutting so I investigated other ways I could create the same effect. I found a hand punches within a local craft store this allowed me to cut circles out quicker and more precise. This process still took time as I then has to stick each individual circle on to the paper in order to create the patterns. Although this process took along time I am pleased I stuck at it and used the the hand process instead of using an easier computerised method. I feel this hand approach way of working has given the work a more organic feel and I am pleased with the results.

  

Week Four

The continuation of drawing has filled up this week up, I have been trying to capture some of the unusual colours within the wings and show the marks on the wings to the best of my ability. These paintings are miniature and not much bigger than the real wings they do not appear identical to the butterfly wings and some look more abstract compared to the original wings however I don't mind this. These paintings are created by what I see and I feel as long as I am showing the interesting and amazing marks on these wings which can hopefully be used to help create ideas for the projects sampling. These paintings are small in size for the reason of time, it has taken me a while to get colours right as well as portraying the interesting marks but  I feel this is not a problem as the original butterfly wings are not much bigger and it does not take their beauty away from them. I also realise that from painting in this way I have no got a ready colour way in which I plan to use when I start to sample. 

Week Three

After last week paintings I began to struggle gaining ideas they were not leading me to any more ideas this and I then realised that I found the imagery esthetically pleasing not inspiring enough for my own work.
Later on in the week on my way into the studio was a exhibition with hundreds of butterfly wings on the ground in which I was instantly drawn too. The imagery below are ones taken of the exhibition and the inspiration from these images encouraged me to start painting again.

Week Two

The photographs gathered from the trip have been used as inspiration for paintings. It has become apparent that my interest is in the beauty of fragments. On my visit to the Gardens at Park Guell I took many photographs which drew my interesting within the beauty of broken tiles. So this week I have had my photographs printed in order to start a series of paintings such as the ones below where I have painted my own snippet of the photograph in order to create pattern.

From my interest in these broken tiles collated from park Guell I decided it would be a good idea to look at other forms or visuals including tiles to give myself more imagery. Therefor decided to take a day to visit Jackfield tile museum, Ironbridge where I found interesting patterns, finding that most of the imagery related were that of floral. These tiles weren't inspiring ideas much at all and I felt I could not use them in relation to my own work at this time.  

I also later started looking at fashion in relation to mosaics and embroidery when I found garments created by Dolce and Gabbana at the 2013 London fashion week which became of interest. These garments are inspired by Sicily where Stephano Gabanna originated from and the collection is aimed at capturing all the amazing places seen.
